Colorblind: A Novel

About them: Alabama author Leah Harper Bowron shares her experiences as a young girl at one of Montgomery’s first integrated elementary schools in her new book, and although she was white, the bullying she not only witnessed, but endured, made a lasting impact. Colorblind shows kids that standing up for what is right for yourself and standing up for others can make a difference.

Even though Colorblind: A Novel was written with tweens and teens in mind, I actually really enjoyed the story and reading it myself. I received a paperback copy of Colorblind: A Novel to read, review and include in our Holiday Gift Guide this year. It is an awesome book and I definitely recommend it! The author Leah Harper Bowron goes through her experiences with racism and bullying as a child. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr had already been assassinated as well as Senator Bobby Kennedy to give you an idea of the time in history this takes place. Lisa Parker is bullied because of the way her nose looks. She ends up dreading going to school because she knows that each and every day she is there she will be bullied. Miss Annie Loomis, a sixth grade African American teacher and the first African American woman as a result of the schools integration comes to Lisa and they end up with an amazing bond with each other. The school, Miss Loomis and Lisa go through racism and continued bullying until something terrible happens that changes them all forever. This is a great book about friendship, overcoming bullying and standing up for what is right. I really feel it is a must read for teens and tweens since a lot of bullying comes to life around these ages. Colorblind: A Novel would be a great gift for your kids this Christmas and I highly recommend it!

Disclosure: I received this product for free, in exchange for my honest review, which may differ from yours. Regardless, I only recommend products and services I used personally, and believe will be a good fit for consumers.
