Back to the Roots was founded by Alejandro Velez & Nikhil Arora during their last semester at UC Berkeley in 2009. Two months away from graduation, and heading into the corporate world of investment banking & consulting, they came across the idea during a class lecture of being able to potentially grow gourmet mushrooms entirely on recycled coffee grounds. Inspired by the idea of turning waste into wages & fresh, local food, they experimented in Alex’s fraternity kitchen, ultimately growing one test bucket of tasty oyster mushrooms on recycled coffee grounds. With that one bucket, some initial interest from Whole Foods & Chez Panisse and a $5,000 grant from the UC Berkeley Chancellor for social innovation, they decided to forget the corporate route, and instead, become full-time urban mushroom farmers!
This company is a very fun one for sure. They have fun kits for the whole family to enjoy. Kids, seniors, grandparents and adults. Its very easy and fun to do. I got the mushroom box one. Simply all you do, is cut slits into the plastic and sum-urge into water for 12 hours or so. Let the moldy bag, yes moldy bag, absorb the water and hold it.. I had a very hard time finding something to hold the plastic bag into it.. The bag isn’t very small, so I used a pot that you use for noodles. Then place bag into box after you took one side off so it can grow right out the plastic from the container! I will be posting a video 10 days later of the process on how it went. I do like how you can do both sides to grow, and then you can eat it after its all done. Yes eat it, after looking at a giant bag of mold and seeds, it did kinda turn me off from the eating part, but I can’t wait to eat giant mushrooms.. This is a very fun project for toddlers they can mist it everyday and watch it grow before their eyes in ten days.. Its a fun and quick process. You just put on a window seal, we don’t have much sun in WA State so im hoping it works and we can see the daily changes!!! Its really easy to do, and requires minimal attention from you. They have a wide variety to choose from, and all sorts of unique kind of projects to do.. This is a must if your toddlers love science and crafts, very worth the bucks for sure..
